Every Friday evening for the past few weeks Sam and I meet up around 6 pm. We head out to the garden with our buckets of water and pruning shears to be swooned by the blooms. We harvest bucket after bucket of bright oranges, dreamy pinks, glowing greens and many other sweet hues that make eyes at us. We then cart them over in a red wagon to the picnic table and begin to assemble bunches. Talking about shapes and textures. As we compose these bunches we image the kitchen tables and bathroom counters they will soon adorn. Securing the bunches with ribbons as we admire each other’s creativity. Once the list is checked and we’ve bunched enough for all of the shareholders we prepare the flowers for morning pick up, sometimes with a nice tablecloth and a friendly “love note.” I’d say it’s quite a romantic way to spend the evening.
